Rwanda Mbilima

We are proud to introduce the Musasa Dukunde Kawa Mbilima certified organic coffee to our speciality range, a cooperation that is dedicated to improving not only the the quality of coffee produced by it's farmers, but also the livelihoods of it's members.

With a bold and fruity aroma, expect a bright acidity with notes of blueberry and grapefruit, rounded off with a buttery finish and silky mouthfeel.

A real standout from our latest in house cuppings.

Farmers and Community:

Most of the smallholder producers with whom Musasa Dukunde Kawa works own less than a quarter of a hectare of land, where they cultivate an average of only 250 - 300 coffee trees each as well as other subsistence food crops such as maize and beans. The cooperative gives these small farmers the chance to combine their harvests and process cherries centrally.

Processing:

The level of care that Musasa Dukunde Kawa Mibilima takes over the processing is impressive. For this special lot, the cherries from 11 women and 28 men are carefully handpicked at peak ripeness from their farms. The cherries are then delivered to the wet mill to be submerged in tanks of water to sort out unripe cherries. They are then pulped to remove the external fruit and fermented to begin the breakdown of the mucilage. The coffee is washed and fermented once more before being dispersed on raised beds to dry in the open sun. This lot is unique since all of the producers contributing cherries are certified organic, using no chemical inputs.
