Kenya Orange Co-Ferment

Kenya's coffee trade typically runs through a national auction system: cherry moves from cooperative to exporter to auction floor, with payment reaching farmers months after the harvest clears. Lot 20 took a different route. Licensed as both a cooperative and an exporter, they buy cherry directly from smallholders in Kericho and pay on receipt, rather than waiting on the auction.

That same independence shows up in the ferment. In Kericho County, at 1,800 metres in the Kenyan Rift Valley, Lot 20 seals the cherries in fermentation barrels alongside Koji culture, first noticed by chance on a fermentation tank at their Rongo station, and pulped oranges bought from the same farms that grow the coffee. The mix is fermented anaerobically for 96 hours, agitated constantly to keep it even. It's a genuine co-ferment rather than a straight anaerobic: the sugars from the orange pulp and the Koji culture push the sweetness and complexity of the cup considerably further than fermentation alone.

The result is one of the most experimental lots Lot 20 has produced, built on a model that pays farmers faster and rewards them for trying something few in the region will risk.

DPD NEXT-DAY DELIVERY

Orders placed with DPD before 8:30 am will be sent via Next Day Delivery,; however, this doesn't include weekends. Any orders dispatched on Friday will be delivered on the following Monday.

Any orders weighing over 2.5 kg will be sent via DPD Courier. Your confirmation email will notify you if this is the case. Green coffee orders are restricted to a maximum of 10kg.

This option excludes Northern Ireland and the Scottish Highlands.

For those local to York, we have free local collection points throughout the city that we deliver to on Wednesday and Friday mornings. Orders placed from Friday to Tuesday will be delivered to the chosen collection point on Wednesday morning. You will be notified via email when your order is ready.
