Frequently Asked Questions
How is your decaf coffee decaffeinated, and is it chemical-free?
Our decaf coffees are decaffeinated using a gentle, specialist process that removes most of the caffeine while preserving as much flavour as possible. Rather than roasting out the life of the beans, the caffeine is removed before roasting, using water and/or natural solvents under carefully controlled conditions.
We choose decaf coffees from partners who focus on quality and flavour first, so you’re not just getting “whatever was left over” – you’re getting a proper, well-grown coffee that happens to be decaffeinated.
(If your site specifies a method, you can tweak this to: “Our decaf is processed using the Swiss Water® method…” etc.)
Does your decaf coffee actually taste like “real” coffee?
Yes – that’s exactly the point. Our decaf is chosen and roasted to taste like proper coffee, not a sad, hollow version of the real thing. Expect the same kind of flavour profiles you’d find in our regular range – especially chocolatey, nutty, comforting cups that work brilliantly black or with milk.
Modern decaffeination methods are much better at preserving flavour than they used to be, so if your last experience of decaf was thin and bitter, it’s worth giving this a fresh try.
How much caffeine is in decaf coffee, and is it safe to drink in the evening?
Decaf coffee isn’t completely caffeine-free, but it typically contains around 97% less caffeine than regular coffee. In practical terms, that means a cup of decaf has only a small fraction of the caffeine you’d get from a standard cup.
Most people find decaf absolutely fine to drink in the afternoon and evening without affecting their sleep, but everyone’s sensitivity is different. If you’re avoiding caffeine for medical reasons, it’s always worth checking with a healthcare professional – but for most coffee lovers, decaf is a great way to enjoy the ritual and flavour of coffee later in the day.
Can I use your decaf coffee in an espresso machine, V60, AeroPress or cafetière?
Absolutely. Our decaf coffees are roasted with home brewers in mind, just like the rest of our range, and they work well across all common brew methods:
Espresso machine – choose espresso grind for decaf flat whites, lattes and cappuccinos.
V60 / pour-over – choose medium grind for a clean, flavourful decaf filter.
AeroPress – a medium-fine grind works well; you can tweak your recipe just as you would with regular coffee.
Cafetière / French press – go for coarse grind for a rich, comforting decaf brew.
If you have a grinder at home, ordering whole bean will give you the freshest, most flexible decaf experience.
How does your decaf compare to your regular House and Single Origin coffees?
We approach decaf with the same mindset as the rest of our range: start with good quality green coffee, then roast it to bring out sweetness, balance and character.
Compared to our House coffees, decaf is designed to be just as drinkable and comforting, especially if you enjoy chocolatey, nutty profiles.
Compared to Single Origin and Speciality, decaf tends to be a little more classic and approachable in flavour, but still far from boring.
If you love the taste of coffee but want to cut back on caffeine, you can happily make our decaf your everyday cup, or mix it with regular beans for a “half-caf” blend at home.
